CNR fire experts on KQED Forum
After two years of sparse rains, California fire officials say this year's wildfire season has started a month earlier than usual and that the fires are stronger.
Cooperative Extension Specialiists Max Moritz and Bill Stewart go on KQED's Forum to discuss this year's already fierce fire season in the context of climate change and current science and technology.

Gilless Reappointed CNR Dean
J. Keith Gilless has been reappointed as the Dean of the College of Natural Resources, effective July 1, 2013, for a five-year period, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost George Breslauer announced in an email today (May 30).

UC researchers are engineering the tobacco plant to produce biofuels

Once celebrated as an economic mainstay, the tobacco industry has been hard hit by health concerns, bans, lawsuits and the social stigma of cigarette smoking.
Now, UC researchers are testing the plant’s potential to be genetically modified in order to produce socially acceptable bio-fuels to power airplanes, cars and trucks. Preliminary results are encouraging, but more research is required before tobacco can be commercially farmed as an energy crop to meet the demand for alternatives to fossil fuels.
